In the age of Google Drive, Dropbox and other mega cloud storage services, it’s easy to overlook the other image hosting platform hiding in plain sight: Amazon Photos. The online retailer is known for selling just about everything on earth; yet, somehow its image-hosting capabilities are often overlooked. Having used it for some time now, our Amazon Photos review will look at the pros and cons of using the service to backup your image archive.
In the age of 4K video and 50-megapixel images, having a proper photo storage platform for your image archive is more important than ever. Photographers have flirted with numerous cloud storage options over the years, but buyouts and changes in the marketplace have made it difficult to know where to store your photos. Once you build your archive up somewhere and craft a taxonomy, you don’t want to move it.
SEARCH FOR PHOTOS BY KEYWORD. Your photos are easy to find, because the app organizes your photos automatically. Prime members can quickly find any specific photos. The Amazon Prime Photos app settings allow you to edit your profile, adjust the upload and download capacity, create live photos and adjust security. SUMMARY I want to mention one of the most important advantages of Amazon Cloud storage – the storage is simple and convenient. Prime Video benefits are included with an Amazon Prime membership and if Amazon Prime isn't available in your country/region, you can join Prime Video to watch. With your membership, you can watch hundreds of TV shows and movies on your favorite devices. To get started, go to PrimeVideo.com, or download the Prime Video app on your mobile device.
Originally a bookseller, Amazon is now invading nearly every facet of our lives these days, from its smart speakers to original television content. But one of Amazon’s many services that doesn’t often get the hype it should is its photo storage capability.
How do I store my photos on Amazon Prime?
You can store your photos on Amazon Prime Photos or Amazon Cloud Drive. Both platforms are included within your Prime subscription and offer incredible value for photographers looking to back-up a significant archive.
How much Amazon Prime photo storage do I get?
Amazon Photos offers unlimited photo storage to Prime members. These members can also invited up to five friends or family members, who will also get unlimited photo storage in Amazon Photos’ Family Vault.
Amazon Drive is also included with your Prime subscription, offering 5GB of storage for videos and other content. In our review of this service and others, for the price of a Prime subscription that’s a very good deal. But we digress.
Amazon Prime offers many benefits, but for photographers its unlimited photo storage – which comes free with a Prime membership – is unrivalled in the marketplace. Even Flickr caps its users’ storage at a terabyte.
What is the difference between Amazon Photos and Amazon Drive?
There are two ways of using Amazon Prime for photo storage: Amazon Photos and Amazon Drive. To understand the difference, try thinking about it terms of a website. Amazon Drive is like the content management system, or CMS – the back end where you upload and manage files. Amazon Photos is the front end, the public-facing site where you see the fruits of your labour in all their glory.
Also, Amazon Photos will display your images. But Amazon Drive can also store your music files, Word documents, PDFs and anything else. Drive is more of an asset management platform. Prime Photos is more of a gallery.
Both Amazon Photos and Amazon Cloud Drive offer the same unlimited photo storage. However, for all other files – including videos – you’re limited to 5GB. Once you exceed that number you’ll need to purchase more storage for those files.
In our ongoing Amazon Photos review, the limitations can be annoying if you rarely shoot video and are slightly over the limit. However, the expansion price isn’t steep and if you plan to shoot more video over time, it’s well worth it.
Family Vault
What is the Amazon Photos’ Family Vault?
Essentially it’s an easy way to share your images with others in your family. It works by enabling you to connect together all the Amazon Prime Photo accounts in the household together, so there is one repository for all the images that everyone can access. Just like a family photo album, but many times larger and thankfully searchable so you can find the images that you want easily.
How to clear an apps cache mac os. All you need to do to get started is to send an invite to the other members of your family and once they’ve accepted the invite they’re able to access the Family Vault.
The way that it can then be used is that once you have selected and uploaded images to your Amazon Photos you can then choose a selection to add to the Family Vault. What app to use to edit photos on mac.
This means that you retain your private photo library alongside the one the rest of the family can access.
Is Amazon Photos free for Prime members?
Yes, Prime Photos is ‘free’ if you subscribe to Amazon Prime. But of course you’re paying £7.99 / $12.99, so free really means ‘within the terms of your subscription’.
Uploading images to Amazon Photos and Amazon Drive
Amazon makes backing up your images very easy for photographers. You can upload to Amazon Photos and Drive via desktop clients for both Mac and Windows machines.
There are also upload clients for iOS and Android devices, as well as Amazon’s own Fire devices.
Uploading to Amazon Photos and Amazon Drive can be done via drag-and-drop.
It’s worth noting that Amazon’s photo upload clients don’t offer syncing or automated backups. However, there are now apps such as Syncovery that offer Amazon Drive as an option for automated file synchronisation.
Amazon Photos Metadata
Amazon Photos populates your images with some metadata, but not much. From your images’ EXIF data it will display the camera name, the shutter speed and aperture, date and time the photo was take, the file name, file size and resolution.
Other platforms might provide a deeper list of EXIF data, such as ISO and White Balance values, but for basic photo storage and archive management, what Prime Photos provides is pretty sufficient.
Amazon Prime members get unlimited photo storage, 5 GB of storage for videos, document, and other files for themselves. They can also invite up to five friends or family members to receive unlimited photo storage, and collect photos together in the Family Vault.
To display an image’s metadata, click the little i icon in the top right.
Sharing images from Amazon Photos
You can share your images from Prime Photos, but the scope is somewhat limited. However, for photographers simply looking to back up their archive, you’ll find all the sharing capabilities you’ll need.
You share Prime Photos via Facebook, email or direct link to the image. You can also share photos to Family Vaults or create groups of other Prime users and invite them to see your images.
What happens to my photos when I cancel Amazon Prime?
This is the big caveat to the boon of having unlimited photo storage. Once you cancel your Amazon Prime subscription or allow it to expire, you revert back to the free plan which only gives you 5GB of space. Amazon says:
If you exceed your Service Plan’s storage limit, including by downgrading or not renewing your Service Plan or no longer qualifying for an Additional Benefit, we may delete or restrict access to Your Files. We may impose other restrictions on use of the Service.
This implies that Amazon may delete your files or restrict your access to them. Most likely, Amazon will offer you the chance to return to Prime and regain access, rather than simply delete them the second you miss a Prime payment.
But if you someday realise Prime isn’t for you and wish to relocate your archive, it’s worth downloading your photos and other files before simply canceling your membership.
Amazon Photos review for professionals
Can Amazon Prime Photos and Amazon Cloud Drive be used by professional photographers? Yes and no. As a photo storage platform and archival management tool, it’s simple-to-use and fantastic value with its unlimited image storage.
But if you’re looking to rely on Amazon Prime for more than photo storage you might need to think twice. Professional photographers might look for an asset management platform that allows them to share images with clients, or even sell photos directly as 500px has just enabled.
Amazon Prime doesn’t allow this. Buried in the terms, Amazon makes clear that your files are intended for personal use and should not be used for commercial purposes.
Now, will Amazon actually know if you are sending a link to a Prime Photos gallery to a client vs your mother? Probably not. But the point is, there’s no easy way for your client to purchase directly from Amazon Cloud Drive or Prime Photos.
Clients would need to give you file names and send a PayPal payment, which is all a bit cumbersome and not very professional. So if your intent is to sell images directly from your archive, Prime Photos and Amazon Cloud Drive might not be the best solution for you.
If you shoot for your own enjoyment, however, or if you’re looking to archive a large collection of images simply as a back-up or even to share amongst family, Amazon Prime photo storage is one of the most user-friendly and economical options out there.
Amazon Photos Storage for videographers
This is where self-awareness comes into it. If you shoot solely stills, Prime Photos Storage is brilliant and well worth the money. If you occasionally shoot stills, Amazon Prime Photos Storage is still worth the money, even if you have to pay for extra video storage every so often.
If you shoot mainly video, though, Prime Photos Storage isn’t for you. The clue is in the title! In our experience, the best value platform for videographers is Vimeo Pro.

Amazon Prime users have access to unlimited photo storage, and 5 GB to save videos and other files. When you get a subscription, you can access your files through a mobile application, a web application, and a desktop application as well. That’s why Amazon Prime Photo storage is called one of the best free online photo storage services for photographers and photo retouchers.
How to get Amazon Prime Photos?
Just sign up to access Amazon Prime, which has a number of benefits, such as fast product delivery, and access to video and music services. If you've previously used Amazon Prime, visit the home page to start using Amazon Photo storage. https://sysrenew146.weebly.com/mac-optimizing-apps-meaning.html. If you do not want to subscribe to Amazon Prime, Amazon Prime Photos is available according to the rates below.
Pros & Cons
Cloud storage security begins with encryption. On the web, we did not find any data about the protocol used. At the same time, the security of the data center from Amazon must be flawless. Amazon supports two-factor authentication for user accounting data. You can activate it through your account at Amazon. Two-step authentication prevents losing control over your account due to a weak or lost password and prevents third-party from using your account. At the same time, when readers want to increase the security level of their files, we recommend they use one more security level to save their files. For example, when you decide to use Amazon Photo storage, and you want to guarantee file encryption, you can encrypt your files using a service like Boxcryptor. Amazon support is available 24/7, chat agents work all day long, and emails are answered throughout the day.

As an alternative to the web app, you can also use the desktop version, which is available for Windows and MacOS. The software interface is simple and user-friendly. In fact, it was done as the upload panel, where you drag and drop your folders and files, which activates automatic photo uploading. There are no options to change, synchronize or merge. You can only pause or cancel the process. When the uploading starts, a progress indicator appears.
Amazon Prime Photos Mac App Mac
The previous version uploaded no more than four files at a time. Previously, loading RAW files seemed endless due to this same limit. The updated application supports simultaneously uploading eight files. You can set up the application for regular backups or use it for synchronization. Furthermore, Amazon Drive supports JPEG, BMP, PNG files and most TIFF types, as well as RAW files from Canon, Nikon and Sony.
The first step is to visit the home page, register, download, and install the desktop application. After that, Amazon photos will ask you to log in.
After authorization, the Amazon Photos app will offer to upload photos and videos from your computer. If you do not want to upload all the photos at once, specify the folder or files you want to work with. I uploaded 27 photos. The size of each was less than 10MB. It took about two minutes. I was pleasantly surprised with the upload speed. Compared to Google Photos, Amazon did it faster.
After uploading a photo, I saw a very simple interface and very little functionality. On the top panel there are two buttons – backup and restore, and the pause button in the right corner to pause the upload.

On the left side are your folders. You can create new folders, add files to them, edit them and move photos or videos from one folder to another. There is a preview window on the right, where you’ll see your photos and videos added to the folders.
Cloud photo storage settings allow you to control the upload speed, independently adjust the channel bandwidth for RAW files and regulate the download speed limit. I liked that the Amazon Drive app gives you the opportunity to work with a proxy server, which may be quite useful. This is the first time I’ve seen this function.
SUMMARY
Can professional photographers use Amazon Prime Photos? Yes and no. As a platform for storing photos and as a tool for managing archives, this is simple and convenient. Although professional photographers may be interested in a program that allows not only storing but also sharing files, for example, with clients or even selling photos directly online. Amazon Prime does not provide tools for this. Amazon has developed a convenient storage solution for personal, not commercial use. At the same time, could Amazon “tell” if you sent the link to the Prime Photos gallery to a client or your mother? Most likely not. But the fact is that your client can’t get the image right from Amazon Prime Photos. Therefore, if you intend to sell images directly from your archive, Amazon Prime Photos is hardly the most appropriate too for this.

There is a free Amazon Photos app for smartphones and tablets for iOS and Android platforms. It looks and works almost the same as the web version. One thing that a smartphone application can do and that the web version cannot – is the automatic synchronization of any new images you take with your phone.
After I downloaded the Amazon Photos application to my smartphone, the service offered to log in or create a new account. After successful authorization, I saw a pleasant, and most importantly, understandable interface. The main menu consists of the following tabs: yours, groups, albums and more.
The Groups tab contains: photos, comments, albums, and additional settings. I liked the layout of the elements – the albums and all the photos are placed separately, you will never get lost. The menu offers an intuitive search. Using keywords, you can easily find the image you want. With the settings, you can edit the background of your album, invite friends and give them or other users access to your content.
The Albums tab enables you to create and edit existing albums, as well as move and group photos.
The Amazon Prime Photos app settings allow you to edit your profile, adjust the upload and download capacity, create live photos and adjust security.
SUMMARY
I want to mention one of the most important advantages of Amazon Cloud storage – the storage is simple and convenient. Many photographers may not like Amazon Photos mobile because of its weak functionality and limited capabilities, but if you are looking for a light and intuitive cloud service without excessive functions and with basic tools – Amazon Photos is perfect for you.
Prime Photos Image Exchange
Sharing Amazon Prime pictures is easy. Photographers get all the necessary features to exchange or control archives and all the accompanying tools. Thanks to Prime Photos, you can share images via Facebook, email or a direct link. You can also share photos with Family Vaults or create Prime users groups and invite them to view your images.
What Happens to My Photos When I Cancel Amazon Prime?
Unlimited photo storage is a great temptation and risk. If you cancel your Amazon Prime subscription or allow it to expire, you will return to a free plan that gives you only 5GB of space.
Amazon says: when you exceed your plan limit, reducing or not extending its duration, we can remove or restrict access to your files. We may impose other restrictions on service usage. This means that Amazon can block your files partially or completely. Most likely, if you skip a monthly payment, Amazon will offer you a chance to return to Prime and regain access, and not just delete them. But if you ever decide that Prime is not for you and you want to change the storage for your archive, you should download your photos and other files before you simply cancel your subscription.
Prime Photos Metadata
Amazon Prime Photos adds basic metadata to your images. The camera name, shutter speed and aperture, shooting date and time, file name, file size and resolution will be displayed according to EXIF data. Other platforms may provide a more extensive list of EXIF data, such as ISO values and white balance, but for basic photo storage and archive control, the information provided by Prime Photos is enough.
Supported Types of RAW Files
RAW files from the following camera models are supported by Amazon Drive and Amazon Photos as a photo file. However, the system does not generate a preview of the file. This is not a final list:
Nikon (NEF files) - Nikon D1, Nikon D1X, Nikon D4, Nikon Coolpix A, Nikon E5700, Nikon AW1, Nikon D800, Nikon D50, Nikon D610
Canon (CR2 ** files) - Canon 5D, Canon 1D, Canon 1D MarkIIN, Canon Rebel SL1, Canon 60D, Canon 5D MarkIII, Canon 1D MarkIV Amazon Prime Video App
You can store these photo formats in Amazon Drive and Amazon Photos, but currently, the service does not support previews for ARW (Sony), CRW (Canon RAW CIFF image) or ORF files (Olympus). To view these files, download them to your computer and open them in the appropriate program.
Tip. When your RAW file is not identified as a photo, try converting it into DNG (Adobe Digital Negative). Although Amazon Drive recognizes these files like photos, some information related to the file (like the time and date when the photo was taken) may not be recognized.
Amazon Photos vs Google PhotosAmazon Photos 4.0Google Photos 4.0
In comparison with Google Photos, Amazon Drive is more user-friendly but has some unnecessary features. In general, the service has an intuitive interface and basic photo management tools. In addition, Google Photos storage is more expensive, so the reasonable price of Amazon Photos is really important for me. Of course, Google Photos offers more tools and features, but think twice about whether you want to overpay.
Amazon Photos vs DropboxAmazon Prime Photos App For MacAmazon Photos 4.0Dropbox 4.5
In this case, Dropbox storage undoubtedly leaves its rival far behind, and there are several crucial arguments. Unlike Google Photos, Dropbox has quite an acceptable pricing, roughly corresponding to Amazon Photos. However, it remains the leader because of a good price-quality ratio. In fact, some of its options are even better than what Google Photos offers. However, comparing Dropbox and Amazon Photos, I can say that the first is much simpler.
Should You Use Amazon Photos?Amazon Prime Photos Pc App
Should you use Amazon Prime Photos for your cloud photo storage? If you are not yet an Amazon Prime member, take your time and explore other available variants. SmugMug, Dropbox, Google, Flickr and others, which offer slightly different sets of features and prices. Some of them are better for photography enthusiasts – others are for professional shooters. For example, if you frequently work with videos, you might find SmugMug a better option. If you are an average photography enthusiast, Prime Photos offers an attractive price for unlimited photo storage space.
If you are an active Amazon Prime member, I’ll give the positive answer with some nuances to take into account. As a Prime user, it is easier for you to increase the price tag for services, so if you can get more options for this money, why not use the service to the fullest? You can use Prime Photos as the main backup or alternative storage. In any case, this is a mere trifle, if you already have an Amazon Prime membership. The only reason to avoid using Prime Photos service may be the “non-commercial” character of the usage policy.
Amazon Prime Photo App
We would recommend using Amazon Prime Photo storage. Uploading your image library to Prime Photos and using it as part of an image backup system has a low cost for an unlimited amount of cloud storage, which is really impressive.
